Craft Cocktails & Whiskey on Whiskey Row Prescott Arizona

Fire & Sword lives below the street—shaped by Prohibition, when people gathered to loosen the rules and lower their guard. It was never fully hidden. Always in plain sight, just far enough removed to feel a little dangerous in the best way. That still holds. Step down and something shifts. The pace slows. The edges soften. You settle in a little deeper. Whiskey, taken seriously. Flights worth sharing. Craft cocktails with a steady hand. Some things aren’t meant to change.

Arizona went dry in 1915. The town didn’t.

In Prescott, enforcement came fast—stings, seizures, arrests.

Above ground, law and pressure. Below, speakeasies. At Hotel St. Michael, a candy store faced Whiskey Row—candy sticks, licorice, sugar and molasses in the air. In the back, an unmarked staircase, easy to miss.

Below, a room with a simple bar and a few tables, where ranchers, businessmen, lawmen, and locals gathered. Glass on wood, conversations kept low, no one asking too many questions. There was an edge to it—comfort, too.

Local liquor was rough. The good stuff came by train. Cases were broken down, quietly loaded, then moved by wagon on back roads into Whiskey Alley—into basements, into rooms like this. Some shipments made it. Others didn’t. In 1916, a local bootlegger, John Berent, “Dutch John,” was caught. The evidence never made it to court, the charges didn’t hold, and no one seemed too surprised.

In 1933, Prohibition lifted—like a hard rain letting up. Doors opened. People stepped back out, back to it, like it never left.
